The retina is the thin layer that lines the back of your eye. When it tears and peels away it usually doesn't hurt, and without fast treatment it can cause permanent vision loss.

Every tool was real

• The shrinking bubble is a gas bubble injected into the eye. It slowly absorbs.
• Slipping under is gas getting beneath the retina, a real complication.
• The laser welds the retina down around a tear.
• Cryo freezes the tear through the eye wall, so it works even when blood blocks the view.
• Murk is bleeding into the eye's gel. The Vac is a vitrectomy cutter that clears it.
• The Zapper is diathermy, cauterising bleeding vessels. Too much burns the retina.
• The Buckle is a scleral buckle, a band sewn round the outside of the eye to push the wall back against a detachment.
• The Lens is a surgical contact lens that magnifies the retina. The Pin is external drainage, a needle that lets the fluid out from outside.
• Sinker is heavy liquid (PFO) that sinks onto the bottom of the retina. Goo is silicone oil, which fills the eye to hold everything flat.
• The dealer was a scrub tech all along, handing you the instruments.
• The Spark crack is a macular hole. Surgeons peel a thin membrane with fine forceps, then float a gas bubble against it.
